Agiorgitiko (pronounced ah-yor-YEE-tee-ko) is Greece’s most widely planted red grape variety. Its name—“St. George’s grape”—may honor the chapel of Saint George in Nemea or the Eastern Orthodox feast day celebrated near harvest time. In Nemea, wines made from Agiorgitiko are affectionately nicknamed the “Blood of Hercules”, a nod to the myth where the hero slayed the Nemean lion and drank the local wine.
